Hull RUFC vs Macclesfield RUFC – Digital Programme

The digital version of our game day programme for our Fourth home game of the 2025/26 season with Macclesfield will appear here.

Today’s Visitors : Macclesfield RUFC

Welcome to the Ferens Ground for today’s National 2 North league game against our visitors Macclesfield RUFC.

The club is one of the oldest in the country and this season celebrate their 150th anniversary resulting from rugby first being played in Macclesfield by a side called the 8th Cheshire Rifle Volunteers.

After playing at several locations the club moved to their present home Priory Park in 1980. They won promotion to North One at the end of season 1994/95 before winning promotion to the national leagues at the end of season 2002/03. The club subsequently won further promotions from National Division 2 North in 2009/10, 2013/14 and 2015/16. Winning the 2023/24 Regional 1 North West league resulted in the club being promoted to National League 2 West and this season the club was moved across to participate in National League 2 North. In addition Macclesfield have won the Cheshire Cup on eight occasions.

Today is only the 5th meeting between ourselves and Macclesfield and we have yet to register a victory against our visitors. The previous four results between the club are as follows ;

2013/14

21 September 2013      Macclesfield 36-26 Hull

4 January 2014                 Hull 17-37 Macclesfield

2009/10

19 September 2009      Hull 19-44 Macclesfield

1 May 2010                        Macclesfield 50-17 Hull

In both seasons Macclesfield were crowned Champions and also by coincidence on both occasions they were coached by Geoff Wappett who was our own Director of Rugby in 2007/08 and returned to us for a coaching spell in 2014/15.

This season Macclesfield have adapted well to life in National 2 North and arrive at the Ferens Ground sitting 5th in the league. They won their opening four league games – beating Sheffield Tigers and Hull Ionians at home coupled with away wins at Rossendale and Preston Grasshoppers – prior to last Saturday’s first defeat of the season losing 19-21 at home to Fylde.

We welcome the players, officials and supporters of Macclesfield RUFC to our ground and hope they enjoy their visit.

Enjoy the game.
