Our Weekly National 2 North Round-Up

Round six provided just two Yorkshire County derbies and in the first of them Wharfedale Posted their fifth win of the season with a resounding 31-7 home victory over struggling Otley, who have only won one of their games so far. Wharfe led 12-7 at the break after scoring two tries but ran in three more to claim maximum points. Otley were still in contention until the 56th minute when Wharfe scored the first of their second-half tries. Man-of-the-Match was the home side’s Jake Armstrong,

Sheffield Tigers entertained league leaders Leeds Tykes and after trailing 31-17 at the break eventually lost the game by 50-29. The Tykes scored five tries in the first period and two in the second but the Tigers had their moments and scored four themselves. They can take pride in their spirited display during the game. Harry Jukes, the Tykes winger scored a hat-trick of tries to take the Man-of-the-Match award.

Two Roses games were also played starting with second-placed Rotherham Titans posting an expected 34-19 win over visitors Fylde, which was a fitting way to celebrate the club’s Centenary,   which I am sure we all congratulate them on. The Titans led 21-5 at the break and fully deserved their victory over a tough Fylde side who performed very well. Former Hull players Zak Poole and Tom Tanumi both scored tries in this game. Centre Richard Hayes of Rotherham was declared Man-of-the-Match..

Hull RUFC travelled to Lightfoot Green to take on Preston Grasshoppers before the biggest crowd of the day (650). They led 16-8 at half-time and with five minutes remaining had extended their lead to 30-18. Hoppers then staged an amazing come-back to score two late tries to draw the game at 30-30. Two league points each with Preston getting a try bonus point. Hull fly-half Reece Dean landed 3 conversions and three penalties but the Man-of-the-Match award went to The Hoppers full-back Jacob Brown.

New boys Billingham recorded their fourth win of the season against Hull Ionians who were beaten for the fourth consecutive time this season. They won by 24-17 after leading 12-0 at the interval. There was little to choose between the two sides with Billingham scoring four tries to Ionians three. The visitors pressed heavily in the final few minutes but had to be satisfied with a losing bonus point.

Cheshire side Lymm were hosts to Sheffield RUFC at Crouchly Lane and in a high-scoring game the visitors won by 41-26 after being level 12-12 at half-time. Sheffield scored seven tries to Lymm’s three and were worthy winners. Cristian Hooper the Sheffield winger scored a hat-trick of tries for the Man-of-the-Match award.

Finally, Tynedale v Huddersfield saw the bottom two sides in the division clash at Station Road, Corbridge where Tyne defeated the Yorkshiremen by 33-18 after leading 27-18 at the break. This was Tyne’s first win of the season and they did it in fine style with five first-half tries, including a hat-trick from Man-of-the-Match Jacob Oliver.

A look at the league table shows that Leeds Tykes still have their 100% record intact on 30 points followed by unbeaten Rotherham Titans on 28 points. Wharfedale are on 23 points. Hull RUFC are in sixth place with 17 points. Down at the bottom Tynedale are now on 11 following their first win followed by Otley on 9 and Huddersfield on 6. These three clubs have just won one game each.
