The club’s first ever season in National League 1 hasn’t exactly gone to plan so far. But the experience of playing against well established clubs with Championship pedigree is something the players will appreciate in years to come. Week after week, Hull come up against sides who can call on loan players from Premiership and Championship clubs, something the Chants Ave club is unable to do. Centre Steve Johnson admits the results are frustrating, but the challenge of playing at this level will serve him and the rest of the squad well in the future.
“I’m enjoying the challenge of playing at this level,” Johnson said.
“When you break things down as a backs perspective, the backs are enjoying what we do.
“We are scoring some good tries out wide.
“From the game as a whole. it is frustrating losing and it kills me every week because it’s harder to get over.
“This is a great chance to play at a great level and we are lucky to be here.
“We have to take that and roll on.
“The pace of the game and the speed of play and the ruck speed, line speed, everything, it will carry us in good stead.
“For glimpses we can show that we can compete.
“There are 15 minute periods where teams don’t break us, and we ended up scoring a try.
“If we can stretch that period over a longer period, we know we can do it.
“That’s the difference. The teams we play do that for a lot longer than we do.”
