What a year 2022 has been. The standout story was, of course, being crowned National 2 North champions to secure promotion to National League 1 for the first time in the club’s history. Pre-season training was tough, especially as temperatures reached record levels in the high 30s. Now, as the players prepare for their final game of the year, temperatures have plummeted to minus four degrees. Last weekend’s game at Cambridge was postponed because of a frozen pitch and rearranged for February 4. This weekend’s clash at Darlington MP could also fall by the wayside, but as Michael Jobling explains, that uncertainty does not affect their preparation.
“With the dropping temperatures it’s always a concern that games might not go ahead,” Jobling said.
“But we have to train like every game is on.
“Fortunately our lads are made of pretty tough stuff so the adverse conditions aren’t too unfamiliar.
“We’ve had to swap sun cream for snoods!
“Going from preseason in the scorching temperatures to this, just prepares us as a squad for all conditions.
“We are still throwing the ball about and playing our brand of rugby.
“Last night was minus 4 when we went out and it was crispy on top.
“We had a productive session, but hell it was cold!
“However, we are gritty up north, so we got the job done.”
