Hull RUFC vs Otley RUFC: Match Report

This result gives Hull a lifeline as the three sides above them all lost making the race for survival in National Division Two North a tense affair that could go down to the final game of the season!

Hull played against the elements in the first period and defended well to hold the home side until the twenty fourth minute. Having lost a lineout on their own throw in Hull invited pressure and  Otley took full advantage and after a penalty award their centre  Harvey Sellers made good use of the space he found to touch down near the posts with his off half Fred Spensely converting. Having defended well Hull worked their way up field and with props Charlie Beech and  Loma Kivalu Brough on after thirty minutes Hull turned the screw and a quick tap penalty by scrum half Harry Pinder saw him put second rower Alec Renouf in for a try to see Hull just two points adrift at  7-5 to Otley at the break.

The second period saw Hull with the wind in their sails in more ways than one with winger Tom Lineham a constant threat. Otley were well aware of the importance of this game to them and a Reece Dean penalty for  Hull after fifty five minutes gave Hull a one point lead and the home crowd growing restless.

Six minutes later a Hul scrum five yards out after Otley had carried the ball over their own line saw Hull’s  number eight Paulos Latu charge over for a fine try well converted to see Hull ease ahead further to a 15-7 lead.

Hull had the edge in most departments by now and a seventy fifth minute try by the tireless second rower Alec Renouf converted by Reece Dean saw Hull in an unassailable lead 22-7 with time running out. Despite a yelllow card awarded to Hull captain Ali Heard which helped the home side to a  late converted try by Otley awarded to back rower Lunn converted by Spensely, it  was scant consolation as Hull took home a four point haul with Otley gaining nothing from a game that has dragged them into the relegation fight and given Hull a chance of survival.
