Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

This Week’s Memory Lane ………………..10, 15 and 20 years ago

9 April 2016 – National Three North : Sheffield Tigers 17-15 Hull

Hull saw champions Sheffield Tigers snatch a 17-15 victory with a 30 yard penalty with the last kick of the match. Tigers took the lead in the 20th minute with a converted try but two minutes later Ben Sullivan sold an outrageous dummy to go over near the corner but unfortunately the conversion attempt from Josh Bragman rebounded off the post. It took Tigers just one minute to respond when another converted try put the hosts 14-5 before a well taken Tomasi Tanumi penalty resulted in a 14-8 half time score. The second half had only just begun when Hull prop Paul Sewell was yellow carded but nine minutes later Tigers were also reduced to 14 although it was only when numerical parity was re-established that the next score came after 59 minutes. Harvey Harding moved the ball to find Ben Sullivan who crashed over and Tanumi’s touchline conversion gave Hull the lead for the first time. Just when it seemed Hull would hold out an offence at the ruck gave Mark Ireland the chance he needed to secure the home side’s victory.

9 April 2011 – National Division Two North : Hull Ionians 22-22 Hull

Honours were even at Brantingham Park as Hull Ionians staged a second half fight back to earn a 22-22 draw in a tense and action packed game. Hull’s forwards dominated the early stages and following a line out Scott Plevey went over for the opening try with Greg Lound converting. Too many penalties set Hull back – conceding 11 against 4 in the first half – but a stolen line out resulted in a ball chipped forward for Guy Martinson to win the race and score with Lound again converting. Yet another penalty saw Rob Devonshire yellow carded and the hosts took advantage with a converted try for 7-14 at half time. Hull started the second half well and following a yellow card for Ionians the visitors stretched their lead to 19-7 when Adi Longbone went over for an unconverted try. But the rest of the match was mostly played in the Hull half as Ionians fought back. A penalty and an unconverted try following a second yellow card for Hull captain Chris Murphy saw the hosts narrow the gap to 19-15 but a Greg Lound penalty took Hull seven points clear, however the home side scored under the posts for a converted try to draw the match.

8 April 2006 – North One :  Longton 10-0 Hull

Hull arrived in Staffordshire to find a pitch with standing water on it which coach Terry Garnett described as “a cabbage patch” and in conditions consisting of sleet, rain and high winds the home side gained the win with two push over tries. Hull’s attempts to move the ball out wide were constantly frustrated by the conditions and they were hampered even more when fly half Waylon Tangohau limped off with a hamstring injury in the first half. The hosts tries came in the 9th and 65th minutes, both scored by Longton forwards powering their way over for two unconverted tries. Post match Garnett said “Longton played nine man rugby all match with the ball never getting beyond their scrum half” as the home side continually kicked the ball downfield and used their bigger pack to good effect.

Team : D Martinson, D Smith, J Barkworth, B Hepi, L McKenzie, W Tangohau, C Kendra, M Holness, M Holden, C May, S Bates, G Jackson, K Bates, S Higginson, R Mackay.

Subs: J McLeod, G Martinson
