Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

26 March 2016 : Hull RUFC had no game this weekend.

26 March 2011 – National Division Two North : Manchester 5-54 Hull

Hull visited Grove Park for the first time in their history and delivered a professional performance to complete a league double over bottom of the league club Manchester with a 54-5 win. James Greene scored an early try after he made the extra man in an overlap which James Cameron converted. On 20 minutes winger Will Robinson scored a fine individual try running in from his own half which Cameron again converted. Three minutes before the break a Hull scrum resulted in quick passing along the line and winger Alex Piercy touched down for an unconverted try and a 19-0 half time lead. Hull pushed on after the break and scored two quick tries from Max Lewis and James Greene, both converted by Cameron followed only minutes later by another try for Alex Piercy when he collected Cameron’s lofted kick to the corner to score. Cameron added the successful conversion. Manchester finally got on the scoreboard with a nicely worked unconverted try but Hull had the last word with Greene’s hat trick try followed by Guy Martinson powering over the line to score in injury time allowing Cameron to kick the conversion and wrap the game up.

25 March 2006 – North One : Hull 19-15 Morley

After two defeats already to Morley this season the Powergen Intermediate Cup holders and near certainties for promotion came unstuck at Haworth Park as Hull pulled off a genuine shock win. The result was even more remarkable in a week which had seen Director of Rugby, Gary Pearce step down to concentrate on his business interests resulting in forward coach Terry Garnett to lead the coaching and Maea David to look after the backs. It took Hull only three minutes to strike the first blow when Waylon Tangohau, playing outside centre rather than fly half, make a break before sending in winger John Wilson for an unconverted try. Two minutes later Morley replied with a penalty but just before half time Hull swept the ball out wide for Leroy McKenzie to score with Tangohau converting. There was still time for Morley to launch one more attack and the visitors duly scored an unconverted try for a 12-8 half time score. Morley started the second half in determined mood and scored a converted try just three minutes after the restart to lead 12-15. But with seven minutes of normal time remaining Hull scored a try worthy of winning any game when some excellent interplay between forwards and backs resulted in hooker Adam Atkinson taking the final pass to score his 50th try for the club. Tangohau converted and despite a long spell of added time Hull held on for a memorable win.
