Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?
19 March 2016 – National Three North : Firwood Waterloo 22-20 Hull
Hull went down 22-20 against Firwood Waterloo pipped in the last play of the game after they had battled back to take the lead with five minutes remaining only to let it slip from their grasp. The hosts were much the livelier side early on and, following a yellow card for Hull’s Ben Sullivan after ten minutes, they scored two tries with one converted to establish an early lead. Hull came back into the game once Sullivan returned and a penalty from Tomasi Tanumi reduced the arrears after 24 minutes. However three minutes from the break the home side scored another unconverted try for a 17-3 interval lead. The second half saw a rejuvenated Hull side dominate possession and as the forwards gained good field position Tanumi jinked his way over for a fine individual try which he converted. Two minutes later the same player opened up the home defence with an outrageous back flip pass which Ali Heard grasped to go over for another try which Tanumi also converted to level the scores at 17-17 before he put the visitors in front with a drop goal with just five minutes left. However as the final minute approached Hull conceded a penalty and from the lineout after the kick to touch the hosts fashioned a catch and drive to score the winning try and steal the game.

19 March 2011 – National Division Two North / Yorkshire Cup : Hull 35-31 Morley
A Joe Martin hat trick helped Hull beat Morley and secure not only league points but also a place in the next round of the Yorkshire Cup with a tie against Beverley in early April. James Greene scored after two minutes with James Cameron adding the conversion before Morley levelled matters fifteen minutes later with their own converted try. Hull scored again minutes later when Joe Martin dived over with Cameron again adding the conversion but Morley countered immediately to level the scores again. Hull went back in front again when Martin scored his second try of the game along with Cameron’s 200th point of the season from the resulting conversion. Greene then got the bonus point after just 25 minutes with Cameron again successful and Martin got his hat-trick just before the break when Matt White released the centre to power over from close range with Cameron again scoring the conversion for a 35-14 half time score. Morley came storming back in the second half with 17 unanswered points but they were unable to take the lead despite a very tense final five minutes as Hull held on.
