Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

12 March 2016 – National Three North : Ilkley 14-18 Hull

Ten years ago this was the third meeting between both sides in season 2015/16 – Hull had beaten Ilkley comfortably 46-21 in the league game at the Ferens Ground in September 2015 before Ilkley gained some revenge by beating Hull 20-6 two months later in November in a Yorkshire Cup 2nd round tie over in West Yorkshire. Ilkley had not won a league game at home since October 2015 and on a very heavy pitch Hull ensured that remained the same as the visitors gained a 14-18 away win. Tries from Ali Heard and Danny Hague, one converted by Tomasi Tanumi plus two successful penalty kicks from Tanumi resulted in Hull gaining their 12th win of the season.

12 March 2011 – National Division Two North : Hull 23-29 Loughborough Students

Hull took a single bonus point following a performance that pushed Loughborough Students all the way but ultimately ended in a narrow defeat. The visitors opened the scoring with an early penalty but James Cameron equalised within minutes before the Students regained the lead with a converted try. Two mid range penalties from full back Guy Martinson gave Hull a one point deficit at the break only for Loughborough to score a converted try from a quick tap penalty straight after the restart. Hull responded when Adi Longbone finished a close range catch and drive with Cameron adding the conversion. Five minutes later the Students added another try although the conversion was missed. With fifteen minutes remaining Josh Lamping scored another close range catch and drive try which Cameron converted for a one point 23-22 lead and nail biting finish. But Loughborough regained the lead with a converted try ten minutes from time and although Hull threw everything at the visitors they held on for the away win.

11 March 2006 – North One : West Park St.Helens 18-13 Hull

Second placed West Park St Helens snatched victory with seven minutes remaining to leave Hull very disappointed at getting no reward for some very hard work throughout the match. West Park took the lead after eight minutes with a penalty and seven minutes later scored a controversial unconverted try when it appeared Hull’s scrum half Chris Kendra was obstructed trying to get away from the base of a scrum. Hull hit back when a neat kick from Matt Donkin was picked up by winger Danny Smith for an unconverted try and with no further scoring in the first half it stayed 8-5 at the break. Just before the hour Guy Martinson fielded a kick deep in his own half but managed to advance to the half way line where Waylon Tangohau gained further ground with an incisive run before handing on to Danny Smith to score in the corner for his second try. Martinson’s long range conversion attempt hit the bar and dropped back into play but Hull lead 8-10. A penalty for the hosts restored their lead before Tangohau’s 71st minute drop goal put Hull back in front at 13-11. But just two minutes later West Park wrapped up the win with a fine solo converted try to end the scoring.

Team : G Martinson, D Smith, J Barkworth, M Donkin, J Wilson, W Tangohau, C Kendra, J Ward, A Atkinson, C May, S Bates, G Jackson, K Bates, W Perkins, S Higginson.
