Welcome to our visitors from Northumberland, Tynedale RFC who arrive at the Ferens Ground in 2nd position in the league with a playing record this season of played 20, won 16 and lost 4.
Tynedale RFC have a long and proud history having been formed in 1876 in the town of Hexham playing their first game on 30 December 1876 when they entertained Elswick. In 1880 they were founder members of the Northumberland RFU and in 1887 they won the first of twenty four County Cup finals. They moved to Dene Park, Hexham in 1902 and purchased the ground in 1926, the year of their Golden Jubilee. In their Centenary Year in 1976 they moved to their present ground at Tynedale Park, Corbridge. Interestingly when leagues were introduced in 1987 Tynedale were placed in North One which included Hull & East Riding RUFC.
The club won National Division Three North in 2007/08 to achieve promotion to National Division Two for season 2008/09. The RFU planned a new format of the division for the following season 2009/10 which led to the division being renamed National One and increasing from 14 clubs to 16 clubs – a decision they made halfway through the season. Tynedale remained in National One – the third tier of rugby union – for six seasons before relegation back to National Two North at the end of 2014/15.
Today is only the 10th league fixture between the two clubs although we met twice in cup competitions prior to meeting in league fixtures. Both cup matches were played at our former ground Haworth Park with the following results ;
