Hull were unable to overcome a workmanlike Scunthorpe side as they spurned scoring opportunities from lineouts on their own thrown in twice . A spirited late comeback was not enough to turn the tide but did result in a bonus point.
Hull started well but when they failed to capitalise on an overlap after nine minutes the home side struck back decisively winning a Hull lineout in Hull’s twenty two metre area allowing their scrum half Joey Mowbray to scamper over for a try converted by centre Will Dark after ten minutes. Hull’s woes were compounded when everyone thought the touch judge had signalled for a line out but Scunthorpe’s Will Robinson played to the whistle , quite rightly ,and raced over unopposed for a try again converted by Dark after seventeen minutes.
Hull then had a good passage of play taking the ball to the Scunthorpe line and David Halaifonua made no mistake from short range after a lineout for an unconverted try. Seven minutes later Jamie Shaul pounced on a dropped ball by the hosts to outpace the defence in a thrilling eighty yard run to touch down under the posts for Reece Dean to add the conversion and put his side within two points of Scunthorpe. Dark and Dean exchanged penalties before Scunthorpe fashioned a good catch and drive with a try being awarded to hooker Arnold and converted by Dark after thirty nine minutes .A Reece Dean penalty right on half time keeping Hull in touch at 24-18 at the break.
The second period saw Scunthorpe pull away with an early Dark penalty followed by a forty eighth minute penalty try .When Laurence Pearce ,a former Hull RUFC player surged through from fifty yards for a great try converted by Dark after sixty one minutes , Hull were in trouble. However with substitutions coming thick and fast Hull started to play a non kicking game with the result that in the last ten minutes the constant pressure on keeping the ball in hand saw centre Jack Render dive over in the left hand corner after seventy seven minutes and then in a very similar fashion substitute right winger , Tom Lineham smashed his way over in the opposite corner right on time. Both touchline conversions were made by impressive debutant full back James Farrar which meant that Hull clawed back a bonus point .
