Hull RUFC vs Sheffield RUFC – Digital Programme

The digital version of our game day programme for our tenth home game of the 2025/26 season with Sheffield RUFC will appear here.

Today’s Visitors : Sheffield RUFC

A very warm welcome to our visitors from South Yorkshire to the Ferens Ground for our second home game in 2026.

Founded in 1902 Sheffield RUFC played at a number of different grounds in the city in the early years of their existence. Their original ground was in the Sandygate area of Sheffield followed by spells at Tinsley, Millhouses and Handsworth. The club took up residence at Abbeydale Park in 1919 and have remained there ever since.

The 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s saw the Sheffield club as quite a force in Northern rugby and when league rugby was introduced they played at national level before dropping down the pyramid structure.

Today is only the fourth time Sheffield have played here at the Ferens Ground. Last season 2024/25 Sheffield visited us in October and left victorious with a 36-38 win. In the previous season 2023/24 Sheffield triumphed 15-33 here following their first visit in January 2016 when we won a close encounter 21-16. Prior to this fixture we had only met once before in the league in the old North One season in 2004/05 when we triumphed 48-0 at our former ground Haworth Park.

This season we lost heavily 71-27 away at Abbeydale in October and Sheffield arrive at the Ferens Ground today unbeaten and sitting top of the league with 16 wins from their 16 games played. Last Saturday their scheduled home game against Scunthorpe was postponed for the third time so they last played at the end of January when they beat Fylde at home 29-17 in a game that saw the leagues leading try scorer, winger Christian Hooper, score his 100th try for the club in his 100th game.

So we can expect a tough test today but hopefully a good game of rugby.

Enjoy the game,

Stephen Hodgson
