This Week’s Memory Lane ………………..10, 15 and 20 years ago
13 February 2016 – National Three North : Hull 12-14 Wirral
Hull narrowly lost at home to Wirral with a missed penalty in front of the posts proving to be very costly. Hull fashioned an excellent try after 13 minutes when they retained the ball from a lineout and Joe Stafford went over for an unconverted try. Wirral hit back with a converted try to lead 5-7 after 18 minutes but Hull had the better of the second quarter and were awarded a penalty try converted by Josh Bragman after 36 minutes. Hull returned to the attack and desperate defence from the visitors led to a yellow card and a penalty to Hull who seemed certain to increase their lead but the penalty in front of the Wirral posts was missed to leave Hull leading 12-7 at the break. The second half was a tight affair with no further scoring until six minutes from time when just as it seemed Hull would hold out Wirral fashioned a 20 phase period of play and scored in the corner. With the result depending on the conversion an excellent kick won the game for the visitors.

12 February 2011 – National Division Two North : Huddersfield 23-28 Hull
Hull recovered from an early 20 point deficit and took full advantage of Huddersfield’s indiscipline to claim a league double over the hosts with a 28-23 win at Lockwood Park. Huddersfield looked unstoppable in the early stages and went ahead with a converted try after five minutes. The hosts scored again five minutes later and a penalty on 25 minutes plus a drop goal on the half hour had Hull reeling as Huddersfield led 20-0. Just before the break Max Lewis got on the end of a catch and drive with James Cameron adding the conversion. After the break Hull reduced the gap again when prop Adrian Longbone crashed over and Cameron again added the conversion to make it 20-14. Huddersfield increased their lead with a penalty but the turning point came in the final ten minutes when they were reduced to 13 men in the space of four minutes after two yellow cards. Hull pulled themselves to within two points when winger Will Robinson scored and Cameron converted and with four minutes remaining Rob Devonshire dived into the gap made by the Murphy brothers to give Hull the bonus point and five point winning margin after Cameron converted.

11 February 2006 – North One : Hull 19-37 Altrincham Kersall
Injuries and illness again disrupted preparations as Hull failed to find the form which saw them beat Chester the previous week. Matt Donkin pulled out with a leg problem just before kick off, Brad Hepi was ill, Gareth Jackson was out injured and winger John Wilson was unavailable. There was little sign of any problems early on when fly half Waylon Tangohau kicked ahead, picked up and scored an unconverted try in the first minute. The visitors closed the gap with a fifth minute penalty and went ahead twelve minutes later with a converted try. Just before the half hour Richard Mackay spotted a gap to blast through for a score converted by Tangohau before another Altrincham penalty on 37 minutes gave the visitors a 13-12 interval lead. After the restart Altrincham’s three try blitz in twelve minutes, with two converted, effectively sealed the game. Hull responded when Maea David hoisted a superb cross kick which winger Danny Smith plucked out of the air to score with Tangohau adding the conversion for 19-32. In stoppage time the visitors scored an unconverted try following some smart interpassing to seal victory.
