Despite looking the better side for the first half hour Hull were beaten by an inventive and hard running Macclesfield side who took full advantage of a number of Hull’s defensive frailties to run out comfortable winners.
The game was just five minutes old when Macclesfield struck after disrupting a Hull scrum just five yards out to see their scrum half Mason Winterburn touch down under the post with centre Harry Oliver converting.
Hull were undaunted and began to play some excellent rugby. After just ten minutes Hull’s man of the match, number eight Paulos Latu, cleaned up a scrappy scrum ball near his own line and burst over the gain line and fed the ball to winger Tom Lineham whose chip ahead fell to centre Tom Minns who controlled his catch off his ankles to send the opposite winger Jack Render in for a try in the left hand corner with off half Reece Dean converting to see Hull level. Ten minutes later after a magnificent 50-20 kick by Reece Dean saw Hull’s ensuing lineout just five yards out and good handling ,with full back Jamie Shaul coming into the line , saw Render over once again over in the corner with Reece Dean converting to put Hull into a deserved lead after twenty one minutes.
However from that moment, the momentum shifted and after a concerted Hull attack was halted near the home sides try line Macclesfield ran the ball almost the full length of the field to see their scrum half Winterburn touch down. Worse was to follow for Hull as another Macclesfield handling move after thirty six minutes saw winger Manu Shute touch down and with Oliver converting both tries his side went in to the break leading 21-14 .
The second half was a continuation of the last ten minutes of the first period as the home side ran in four unanswered tries through brothers and wingers Samson and Manu Shute, centres Balckwell and Oliver with Oliver converting two of them to see his side well clear after sixty five minutes .A well worked try for Hull as substitute full back Harry Dawkins sent in Tom Lineham for a consolation try at the final whistle was scant reward for a game that had started so well for Hull as they slipped to a45-19 defeat
