Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?
23 January 2016 – National Three North : Hull 21-16 Sheffield
Hull moved ahead of their opponents into fourth place in the league with this victory courtesy of two late tries in the 11 minutes of added time at the end of the game. Hull took an early lead with penalties by fly half Josh Bragman in the 2nd and 13th minutes but the visitors responded with a penalty, an unconverted try and a second penalty for a 11-6 interval lead. Bragman kicked a third penalty before Sheffield went further ahead with another unconverted try for a 16-9 lead after 71 minutes. Hull stepped up a gear and Joe Stafford gathered a loose ball to go over for a try which Bragman converted to level the score before following more pressure Ben Sullivan crashed over to win the game deep into stoppage time.

22 January 2011 – National Division Two North : Hull 23-12 Luctonians
Hull sealed a 23-12 win against Luctonians at the Ferens Ground but suffered an injury blow to Tevita Vaikona who left the match in an ambulance with a suspected dislocated ankle. James Cameron put Hull ahead with a second minute penalty and constant pressure resulted in Rob Devonshire scoring a try in the corner in the 15th minute which Cameron converted. Cameron added another penalty a minute later and Hull kept up the momentum when Alex Piercy on the right wing scored a try after 25 minutes which Cameron again converted. Luctonians managed a converted try of their own before the half ended but ten minutes into the second half Vaikona suffered what appeared to be a long term injury and from there the match turned ugly as the battle for possession resulted in several off the ball altercations and a yellow card apiece for both teams. Luctonians finished the scoring with an unconverted try in added time to end a tempestuous half.

21 January 2006 – North One : Westoe 34-23 Hull
In a real game of two halves Hull recovered from a 31-6 half time deficit to push high flying Westoe close in a 34-23 defeat. The hosts demonstrated their power down the slope in the first half as they scored five tries with three being converted and the loss of scrum half Chris Kendra after just ten minutes with a calf injury further hampered the visitors. Hull managed just two penalties from fly half Waylon Tangohau but the second half was a different story. Julian Barkworth opened the try count on 53 minutes which was followed by two catch and drive tries from Fred Biddlecombe and Adam Atkinson in the 67th and 74th minutes. Tangohau converted Biddlecombe’s effort and despite a sole penalty for the hosts the visitors were still pressing when the final whistle went.
