Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. 9 January 2016 – National Three North : Hull 12-6 Billingham
Hull got off to a winning start in their opening game of 2016 with a 12-6 victory over Billingham at the Ferens Ground. Hull started well and after just two minutes Harvey Harding side-stepped his way under the posts only for the referee to award the visitors a penalty for crossing. Five minutes later Billingham opened the scoring with a penalty but Hull hit back when Lee Brown and Dario Jurcevic set up Lee Birch to score wide out to give the home side a 5-3 lead after 16 minutes. The second half saw Hull dominate possession and after a succession of penalties awarded against Billingham the referee awarded Hull a penalty try in the 60th minute. Birch’s conversion put Hull 12-3 ahead and their defence stood firm to restrict the visitors to a sole penalty as the home side secured the win.
