Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

19 December 2015 – National Three North : Stockport 29-24 Hull

Stockport turned in a strong first half performance scoring four tries to gain a bonus point and a 29 point haul after only thirty minutes which led to them completing the double over Hull. Despite the Hull pack dominating the set scrum Stockport played a much more mobile game in the first half and opened the scoring with a converted try followed by an unconverted try for a 12-0 lead in the first seven minutes. Hull replied quickly with a try from scrum half Harvey Harding but the rest of the half belonged to the hosts as they scored a further two converted tries and a penalty to lead 29-5 at the interval. Hull came back strongly in the second half. Josh Bragman landed a penalty before Lee Birch scored an unconverted try to reduce the deficit to 29-13. Stockport were finding it hard to get into the Hull half and another Bragman penalty followed by an unconverted try from Ben Thoy set up a nervy finish with the score at 29-21. Stockport’s defence managed to hold out until Hull opted to kick a penalty for a losing bonus point with the last kick of the game for 29-24.

17 December 2005 – North One : Caldy 3-28 Hull

Hull returned to winning ways with a performance described by Director of Rugby Gary Pearce as “the best 80 minutes we have produced all season “. It took only six minutes for Hull to get on the scoreboard when full back Guy Martinson came into the line and went over for a try converted by Waylon Tangohau. The Kiwi fly half added two more penalties before Caldy landed a penalty of their own in the fourth minute of first half stoppage time. That made the score 13-3 to Hull at half time and it took them only five minutes of the second period to go even further ahead. Second row Nomani Tonga scored an unconverted try followed shortly afterwards by Tangohau kicking a penalty and Hull led 21-3. And it was Tangohau who finished the scoring in the 74th minute with a fine solo try which he also converted to complete an excellent day for the visitors.
