Hull RUFC vs Wharfedale: Match Report

Hull started the game with great confidence and ran into a sixteen point lead after half an hour but a yellow card after thirty eight minutes changed the momentum of the game in Wharfedale’s favour who then took a firm grip on the game to run out convincing winners.

The game was just ten minutes old when Hull’s pressure told and off half Reece Dean kicked a good penalty goal to put his side in the lead. Five minutes later the same player doubled the lead with a forty five yard penalty kick. Two minutes later Reece Dean was involved again when a great crossfield kick was taken magnificently by winger Tom Lineham who fed centre Tom Minns who outpaced the defence to plunge over in the right hand corner for an unconverted try . With Hull in the ascendancy another crossfield kick was taken by winger Tom Lineham who once again fed centre Tom Minns before taking the final pass himself to dive in at the right hand corner for another unconverted try to see Hull seemingly in command at 16-0 in the lead with just minutes to the half time break.

Wharfedale responded with some forceful forward drives but just when it looked like Hull would hold out till half time a yellow card after thirty nine minutes awarded against prop Loma Kivalu saw the ensuing penalty to the visitors result in a lineout to them just twenty five yards out. The catch and drive was well orchestrated and when the ball was released near Hull’s line  Wharfedale centre  Brad Viner stormed over for a try unsucessfully converted to reduce Hull’s lead to just eleven points.

The second half saw Wharfedale make immediate use of their one man superiority as they surged downfield with scrum half  Riddiough scampering over after good work by his forwards with Haddon adding the conversion to see Wharfedale within two points of Hull. Then home side immediately used the cross kick tactic again and it almost paid off but the ball went to ground and this heralded a scoring spree by the visitors. With the penalty count against Hull rising Wharfdale were able to kick for position and after fifty minutes they drove from fifteen yards out after a lineout , with backrow forward Tweedale getting the touch down which was  converted by Haddon.Three minutes later Haddon kicked a penalty goal to see his side 22-16 in the lead. Three more tries followed to forwards Hedgely and Dickinson with centre Viner getting in the act in the seventy fifth minute. Haddon converted two of the tries and added a late penalty A very good try by Hull’s winger Tom Lineham on seventy eight minutes was too late to make a difference to the result as Hull went down 44-21 .
