Hull RUFC vs Tynedale: Match Report

Hull’s main objective was to get something out of this game which they did with some inventive rugby producing four well worked tries. The mounting injury list meant that try as they might they were not able to contain the powerful Tynedale pack in the loose and eventually lost 66-26 to one of the promotion challengers.

The game started about as badly as it could have done for Hull who, having caught the kick off had a kick charged down immediately with Tynedale’s Turnbull securing the rebound to romp over for a try within the first ten seconds with his full back Grant adding the conversion. Hull’s reaction was equally swift and spectacular as they swept upfield and a great chip through saw full back Harry Dawkins race onto the ball and touch down just sixty seconds after the Tynedale try.  The conversion by off half Harry Gunn-Mclean drifted just wide. Hull were back on the score sheet eight minutes later when after a catch and drive from a lineout the ball was moved to centre Jack Render  who handed off his opposite number and burst over the line near the  posts with Gunn-Mclean adding the conversion to see his side take the lead 12-7. This seemed to galvanize the home side and after seventeen minutes ,when Hull lost  a lineout ,Tynedale used the turnover to put their winger Tully in for a try wide out with full back Grant adding a magnificent conversion giving his side a lead they never relinquished.

After twenty five minutes the home side extended their lead with centre Miller crashing over from short range  after another well won lineout with Grant adding the conversion. The last few minutes of the half saw a flurry of scores with a Grant penalty after thirty four minutes being followed by  an interception try  by Tynedale’s winger Rogers converted by Grant. Hull were always trying to play attacking rugby and it was no surprise when centre Tom Minns ,playing his first full game ,outpaced the defence on his way to a try under the posts converted by his off half Gunn-Mclean .With the halftime whistle approaching Tynedale scored a classic catch and drive try with Hanning getting the touchdown with , inevitably, Grant converting to see his side go in at halftime leading 38-19 .

The second half saw Tynedale quickly into their stride and tries from Tully and Hutton within eight minutes, both converted by Grant,  put the game well beyond Hull but the visitors never stopped trying to get the fourth try and bonus point. This they achieved in the fifty second minute when after a powerful catch and drive the unstoppable Hull prop Charlie Beech barreled his way over for a  try converted by off half Harry Gunn-McClean .

Two late tries by Tynedale’s Rattray and Grant both converted by Grant saw the home side to a convincing win but Hull showed attacking ability and will improve as their injury list diminishes .
