Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?
31 October 2015 – Hull RUFC had no game this weekend.
30 October 2010 – National Division Two North : Hull 17-23 Westoe
Hull went down to a 23-17 home defeat to Westoe in a tense encounter at the Ferens Ground. The visitors were awarded three penalties in the opening ten minutes but only one was converted before they extended their lead with an unconverted try after twenty minutes. Ten minutes later Hull replied when Ollie Hardisty kicked to Alex Piercy who himself kicked ahead for a try converted by Greg Lound. Westoe scored again from the kick off with a drop goal and pushed further ahead with a converted try just before half time. Greg Lound landed a penalty to end the scoring in the first half. James Kirk dived over for a try converted by Lound after the restart but the hard work was undone when the visitors claimed another unconverted try and despite exerting late pressure there was no way back for Hull against the leagues best defence.

29 October 2005 – North One : Hull 19-15 Westoe
There was a miute’s silence prior to kick off in memory of Lionel Sheppard, DFC, a former chairman and treasurer of the former Hull and East Riding club and president of Hull RUFC between 1995-1997. Lionel who was aged 82 was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross as a fighter pilot during the Second World War.
Hull gave a debut to fly half Waylon Tangohau and he had a dream start getting on the scoresheet inside the first ten minutes following an early unconverted try from the visitors and a breakaway try for Hull scored by winger Danny Smith converted by Guy Martinson. Tangohau then sidestepped his way past a handful of defenders for a wonderful individual try converted by Martinson and Hull led 14-5 at the break. After the restart Westoe kicked a penalty followed by a converted try to lead 15-14 and they held onto this as the match went deep into added time. But in the eighth minute of injury time Hull gained possession and decided to open up play with the ball being passed along through Dan Martinson, Julian Barkworth and Tangohau before Guy Martinson came into the attack to touch down for the winning try.
