Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

17 October 2015 – National Three North : Wirral 14-7 Hull

Hull missed the chance to go top of the table after going down 14-7 to Wirral. Both teams attempted to play attacking rugby but neither could break down each others well organised defences and the game was scoreless at the break. Hull pressed for the opening score but spilled the ball on several occasions to relieve the pressure on the hosts. Wirral then managed to create sustained pressure on the Hull line and their scrum half darted over from close range on 56 minutes to break the deadlock. The try was converted and four minutes later the hosts scored another converted try for a 14-0 lead. Hull never gave up and came back strongly in the last 15 minutes eventually being awarded a penalty try on 79 minutes which Josh Bragman converted to make the final score 14-7.

Ten minutes later Kirk kicked a penalty to give Hull a 10-0 interval lead. Vaikona scored his second try just four minutes into the second half and five minutes later Will Robinson evaded three challenges to score in the corner with Kirk adding the conversion. An even better team try got Hull the bonus point on 70 minutes as winger Danny Smith finished a fine move that Kirk again converted.
