Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

3 October 2015 – National Three North : Sheffield 19-23 Hull

A faultless display of goal kicking by Josh Bragman, giving him a 13 point tally, ensured Hull came out victorious against a determined Sheffield RUFC. A 3rd minute penalty by Bragman opened the scoring but this was negated moments later by the hosts who then took the lead with a converted try after 14 minutes. Both sides exchanged successful penalty kicks for a half time score of 13-6 in favour of the home team. The second half started at a frantic pace and Hull hooker Tom Rice eventually scored following an interception by Joe Martin on his own line. Bragman’s conversion levelled the scores and five minutes later his long pass found Tomasi Tanumi in space to add a further try which Bragman converted to give Hull a seven point lead. Sheffield piled on the pressure and two penalties put them within a point of Hull with nine minutes remaining but another successful penalty from Bragman on 74 minutes gave Hull a four point lead which they held onto to claim the win.

2 October 2010  – National Division Two North :Luctonians 23-20 Hull

An injury time drop goal condemned Hull to a cruel defeat at Luctonians. The home side started strongly but after missing an early penalty it was Hull who scored first when James Greene crossed for an unconverted try. Luctonians took the lead in the 10th minute with a converted try before Hull responded with scrum half Ollie Hardisty scoring from close range and James Cameron adding the conversion . Another Luctonians penalty pegged the score back to 12-10 before the home side went back in front with an unconverted try. The lead changed hands again when Alex Piercy darted over in the corner for Hull although Cameron could not convert the goal. The final score of the first half saw the Luctonians prop go over and despite the missed conversion the home side led 20-17 at half time. The second half proved to be a stalemate but Hull drew level with a 74th minute penalty from Cameron. Luctonians missed a penalty of their own and a draw appeared the likely result until young winger John Morris collected a loose ball, steadied himself and landed an excellent long range drop goal to give Luctonians the victory.
