Memory Lane with Stephen Hodgson

Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

5 September 2015 – National Three North : Hull 83-8 Burnage

Following relegation to National Three North Hull started the new campaign in fine style, demolishing Burnage in the club’s first ever league meeting. Nine Hull players scored tries, together with a penalty try, and fly half Josh Bragman kicked nine conversions as Hull rattled up their second highest points tally in league rugby at that time. Hull scored early through Ben Sullivan and Will Robinson before Joe Stafford barged over for two more. Will Harrison scored his first try for the club before Robinson and Lee Brown put Hull in total control at the break. The second half continued in the same vein with Hull dominating at line out, scrum
and breakdown resulting in further tries for Ali Heard, Joe Martin, Tomasi Tanumi, debutant Harvey Harding and Will Robinson completing his hat-trick before a late penalty try. Burnagekept working but a try and a penalty were scant reward for the visitors as Hull began theseason with an emphatic win.

The strength of Hull’s pack made the difference in this opening National Division Two North fixture of the season. Kendal scored an early penalty before Alex Piercy touched down for Hull with James Cameron converting. Two further Kendal penalties pushed the hosts ahead but a Matt White unconverted try put Hull back in the lead with both sides successfully scoring penalties before the half time interval. Within minutes of the restart Tevita Vaikona scored under the posts and Cameron converted to open up a ten point lead. Ten minutes later a converted try for Kendal reduced the deficit to three points but with twenty minutes remaining winger Piercy finished off a rapid counter attack, debutant James Greene converting.
