Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?
18 April 2015 – National Two North: Birmingham & Solihull 38-40 Hull
Hull needed to win their last two games to secure their National Two North league status and they kept their hopes alive after a pulsating 40-38 win at Birmingham & Solihull. The lead changed hands seven times in a match where both sides knew anything less than maximum points would result in relegation. The first half started well for Hull with off-half Greg Lound kicking a first minute penalty but the hosts responded with a brace of converted tries.
Hull’s response resulted in tries for Adam Corkish and Jonny Matthews in quick succession and was followed by winger Stephen Hihetah and Ryan Holland combining to put Corkish in for his second try. With half time approaching the home side grabbled a catch and drive try to give them a 21-18 lead at the break. The second half started badly for Hull as they conceded a converted try and the home side led by 10 points. However Hull responded magnificently with two close range tries from Matthews and Ollie Cook.
Lound converted the Matthews try and Hull led by two points with the tension rising. In a game that had everything Birmingham scored next when a huge knock-on was missed by the officials and winger Smith rightly played to the whistle to put his side back in front. Another unconverted try for the hosts seemed to have put the game beyond Hull as they extended their lead to eight points at 38-30 with just five minutes remaining. But dramatically a Lound penalty on seventy seven minutes gave Hull hope and in the last minute winger Hihetah shrugged off four defenders to score in the left hand corner and Lound stepped up to land a magnificent match winning conversion to stun the home crowd.

17 April 2010 – National Division Two North: Hull 24-16 Leicester Lions
Hull produced a good second half comeback and from the last move of the match Neil Spence was on hand to finish a catch and drive play to enable the hosts to claim the bonus point. Leicester went ahead early in the match with a penalty before Darren Wigg finished off a catch and drive for an unconverted try. The visitors added another try and a penalty to give them a healthy half time lead. Hull played much better in the second half and Scott Plevey dived over for a converted try before No.8 Rob Devonshire added an unconverted try. The Lions hit back to within a point but the final try from Spence, converted by James Cameron, at the death sealed the win for Hull.
