Boardman Brace Lifts Hull Off Bottom Spot

Hull had their best second half of the season to pull off a dramatic win against Tynedale overturning a 22-3 deficit after 45 minutes to claim a vital 29-22 victory to move off the bottom of the table.

The home side started well enough and a third minute penalty converted by full back Fynlay Hobson gave then an early 3-0 lead. The advantage was very short lived as Hull lost Tynedale’s kick off and the visitors worked the ball well to see off half Josh Leslie in for a try converted by full back Grant Cameron.

Hull’s kick off went out on the full and from the resulting scrum to Tynedale saw them break clean through Hull’s defence with scrum half Dan Baines getting his side’s second try in three minutes but the try was unconverted as Tynedale 12-3 ahead.

The home side fought back with some good field positions, but some lost lineouts and handling lapses meant that the only other first half score went to Tynedale with a late Grant Cameron penalty to see the Corbridge side lead 15-3 at halftime.

The second period did not start well for Hull and after a promising attack was thwarted by a forward pass, the visitors took control and after a series of concerted forward drives saw their second row Chris Wearmouth awarded the touchdown after 45 minutes with Cameron’s conversion putting his side in command at 22-3.

Hull then bounced back and after picking up the ball in their own ‘22’, off half Harrison Astley started a move that ended up with winger Jake Boardman racing 40 yards past three defenders for Hull’s first try. Harrison Astley’s conversion from wide out gave Hull real hope of a recovery with the sore at 22-10.

The home side had brought on Joey Barratt, Charlie Beech and Billy Addy at scum half and prop and second row respectively, which seemed to give the side renewed impetus.

Another series of good forward drives from Hull saw number eight Paulos Latu crash over for another try converted by Astley after 53 minutes to see Hull just five points adrift.

With the balance of power now swung Hull’s way, the home side added to the Tynedale woes when another attack from deep released Boardman who once again outpaced the defence for his second try which went unconverted but levelled the scores at 22-22.

With both sides pressing for the decisive score it was Hull who broke in the 76th minute from their own half with centre Duell Trueman’s one-handed reverse pass giving pacy fullback Hobson all the space he needed to race in under the posts for another converted try seeing Hull seal a dramatic and well deserved victory to take them three places up the league table and within touching distance of safety.
