A tense encounter between two sides trying to garner points in the attempt to move away from the bottom half of the league, saw Sheffield come back from behind in the 63rd minute to win the game with two tries in the last 15 minutes to secure a vital victory.
The defeat leaves an enterprising Hull side with nothing to show for their spirited efforts. After the game Sheffield’s player coach said that they had targeted this game against fellow strugglers Hull, and despite meeting a real physical challenge, they had found a way to come back and win and pick up the bonus points to ease their way out of trouble.
Hull started well and after early pressure Sheffield were penalised in front of their posts with Hull’s full-back Fynlay Hobson kicking an early penalty. With their forwards securing good ball, the home side continued to look threatening and following a lineout on the halfway line Hull’s prop Tom Bairstow burst 40 yards up field and then centre Harry Dawkins made room for Hobson who sailed in for a try to the right of the posts but was unable to make the conversion after 18 minutes.
The Tigers hit back with a good penalty kick from off half William Baker after 23 minutes. Hull were maintaining their territorial advantage and after an attacking maul from a lineout was halted 30 yards out, Hull scrum-half Harvey Harding took the ball and dummied and side-stepped his way through a bemused defence for a try near the posts with Hobson adding the conversion to see Hull 15-3 ahead after 28 minutes.
However, Sheffield struck back almost immediately when they were awarded one of 16 penalties during the match and Baker made best use of a quick tap penalty and he found space to race in under the post for a try he then converted. From the kick-off, Sheffield secured the ball and good hands saw them feed centre James Broadley to score a good try under the posts with Baker converting to give his side a slender 17-15 lead at half-time.
The second half saw Hull regain the lead with a Hobson penalty after 52 minutes, but as Sheffield increased the pressure, Hull’s second row Bill Addy was yellow carded after 62 minutes. Almost immediately, Sheffield took advantage of a mix up at a Hull five yard scrum for flanker Lee Monks to touch down for a try converted by Baker to see his side 24-18 ahead after 65minutes.
Moments later, a Hobson penalty saw Hull right back in the game just three points adrift, but when he was yellow-carded after an interception attempt was adjudged illegal, Sheffield camped on Hull’s line with hooker Archer clinched the game with an unconverted try after a lineout to see his side 29-21 victors.
