Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out games played on this week 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

21 March 2015 – Hull RUFC had no game this weekend.

20 March 2010  – Hull RUFC had no game this weekend.

19 March 2005 – North One: Chester 20-16 Hull

Hull missed the chance to go second in the league table following this defeat to fourth placed Chester. The game started in a furious pace and Hull took an early lead with a Gary Pearce penalty but Chester responded with two quick tries, with one converted, to lead 12-3. Hull hit back with the try of the game when Pearce put Chris Tranmer away on a 40 yard run which resulted in winger Danny Smith scoring in the corner.

A penalty to Chester increased their lead to 15-8 before Danny Smith scored his second try, and his ninth in five games, following good work from scrum half Chris Kendra. The try was unconverted and Chester led 15-13 at half time. Five minutes into the second half Chester scored an unconverted try when their winger scored in the corner to extend their lead but Hull replied almost immediately with another Gary Pearce penalty to reduce the gap to four points. However that was the end of the scoring as both defences held firm and the match finished 20-16 in favour of the hosts.
