Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club Historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. With rugby cancelled 5 years ago due to the coronavirus pandemic Stephen has delved further into the club records to pick out matches played on this week from 10, 15 and 20 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

14 March 2015 – National Two North: Hull 27-21 Stockport

Hull picked up five points in their battle to stay in National Two North with a 27-21 home win over Stockport which owed much to Greg Lound’s two tries and James Kirk’s two last ditch tackles to prevent certain tries. Lound opened the scoring in the ninth minute converting his own try which Stockport equalled with a converted try of their own after twenty minutes.

Ten minutes later Ollie Hardisty picked up from a ruck and dived over for an unconverted try but two minutes before half time a converted try for the visitors nudged them ahead at the break. Hull started the second half well and another unconverted Lound try followed by a penalty kicked by Lound put the hosts 20-14 ahead. With fifteen minutes remaining Stockport scored a converted try to lead 21-20 but six minutes later the referee awarded Hull a penalty try which Lound converted to finish the scoring and give Hull the bonus point.

13 March 2010  – National Division Two North: Hull 40-22 Broadstreet

Hull cruised to a comfortable home win over a plucky Broadstreet side who never gave up the battle. Hull got off to a flying start with a James Cameron penalty after three minutes followed by an excellent cross field kick by Cameron resulting in the Broadstreet defender palming the ball over the dead ball line and preventing Danny Smith from touching down. The referee awarded a penalty try which Cameron converted. Broadstreet got on the scoresheet with a penalty on thirty minutes and in first half stoppage time scored an interception try, duly converted, to draw level.

Hull began the second half with intense pressure and Cameron slotted over two penalties in the first seven minutes. In the fifty fifth minute a strong burst out of defence by Laurence Pearce was taken on by Matt White before the supporting Nick Gandy scored under the posts with Cameron adding the extras. Eight minutes later flanker Darren Wigg followed up his own kick through to score in the corner and put Hull 28-10 ahead. Broadstreet replied with an unconverted try after seventy minutes before Hull scored the try of the game five minutes from time. A great break from Gandy was carried on by Alex Piercy before Gandy completed the move with a try in the corner. Cameron converted with a superb kick from the touch line and Hull led 35-15. Hull substitute scrum half Will Robinson marked his debut with a fine individual try after seventy eight minutes before Broadstreet finished the scoring with a converted try in added time.

Hull delivered an outstanding display of high speed attacking rugby at Park Road to leave the home side reeling as they ran in nine tries to record, what was at the time, a club record away win and score 53 points for the second consecutive game in Hull’s biggest league win of the season. Winger Danny Smith scored his second hat trick in four games and Gary Pearce kicked three conversions having come into the side at short notice for only his third game of the season.

Hull took the lead in the seventh minute when Shaun Higginson scored in the corner before Park replied with a drop goal . Adam Atkinson, Brunsen Sanders, Guy Martinson and Danny Smith added further tries as Hull dominated the first half. The visitors extended their lead when prop Andy Fish raced 20 yards from the half way line for scrum half Chris Kendra to finish the move and score. In the sixty eighth minute Pearce intercepted to put Matt Donkin away on a 40 yard run to score. Hull now led 39-3 and five minutes later Danny Smith scored his second try beneath the posts before completing his hat trick with four minutes remaining when running 40 yards to score near the posts and inflict Birkenhead’s heaviest home league defeat for years.
