For years, Guy Martinson’s record of 242 appearances for the club stood. However, as each season has passed, his grip on the milestone got looser and looser. In our pre-Christmas win at Hull Ionians, the record finally fell to current first-team captain Ali Heard. Heard admitted surpassing a legend of the club like Martinson was not something he set out to do from the day he made his first appearance. But he’s delighted he was the one to do so.
“It’s a massive achievement to beat Guy’s record for appearances,” Ali said.
“I know Guy quite well from his time at the club watching our games.
“He always joked that I should retire before I get past his 242 games, so it was great to finally get there. It’s a massive milestone.
“It was never something I really thought about. I just wanted to play and enjoy my rugby and do as well as I can.
“Guy congratulated me on breaking his record and said it couldn’t have happened to a better bloke.
“He joked he would have been gutted if Jobbers had beaten his record, but he might get there in the next game or two.
“I love playing for this club over the years. The games that stand out the most for me are the wins at Hull Ionians in the last two seasons.”
