Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from 5, 10 and 15 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

8 February 2020 – National Two North: Luctonians 10-17 Hull

Hull claimed precious points in this mid-table clash although it took twenty minutes before the scoring started when Simon Humberstone slotted over a penalty. Almost straight from the restart Hull pushed the hosts back and Rob Watts went over among a melee of players.

Luctonians responded with a converted try to make it 10-7 to the visitors at the break. Hull added their second try following a flowing move which resulted in Lee Birch touching down, with Humberstone again adding the extras. A penalty to Luctonians in the 70th minute gave the home side hope but Hull’s defence held firm for a valuable win.

7 February 2015 – National Two North: Caldy 15-13 Hull

A very close game went the way of the home side as Hull fell just short. Caldy swept into an early lead with a converted try after just three minutes which they followed up with another try on seven minutes. After forty minutes Greg Lound converted a penalty to give Hull something to build on. Caldy extended their lead with a penalty but Hull started to dominate possession with Ollie Cook and Rob Devonshire prominent.

Devonshire scored an unconverted try followed by Adam Tamanis finishing a catch and drive move for another unconverted try to reduce the deficit to just two points. Stephen Hihetah made 80 yards only to be held up a yard short of the Caldy line and the last chance was snuffed out as Caldy held on for the win.

6 February 2010  – National Division Two North: Leicester Lions 30-15 Hull

After eight consecutive league victories which propelled Hull up to seventh in the table the fine run ended with this first defeat since early November. Leicester had a player sin-binned after just five minutes and James Cameron duly stepped up and opened the scoring from the resultant penalty. However ten minutes later Hull’s Alex Campbell saw yellow for foul play and Leicester capitalised with a try. Worse was to follow for Hull when captain Chris Murphy was shown a red card after a challenge reported by the touch judge.

Two further Leicester tries extended their lead to 19-3 at half time. Hull came out strongly in the second half and scored twice through Laurence Pearce and Rob Devonshire to cut the gap to four points. Winger Danny Smith thought he had scored another for Hull but the pass to him was adjudged to be forward and Hull felt further aggrieved when the touch judge overruled the referee for two disputed penalties for the hosts to extend their lead. Hull’s Matt Davies suffered a serious knee injury with five minutes remaining before Leicester scored the final try with the last move of the match.
