Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from 5, 10 and 15 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

25 January 2020 – National Two North : Caldy 27-17 Hull

An excellent game of rugby was ultimately  decided by the more clinical display from the league leaders Caldy. Hull started brightly putting the home side under pressure resulting in an early penalty for Simon Humberstone. Caldy were making uncharacteristic errors but Hull were not clinical enough to exploit and a couple of penalties followed by two converted tries was enough to counter a converted Charlie Beech score for Hull and resulted in Caldy leading 20-10 at the interval.

In the second half Caldy lifted the tempo further and their flanker powered over to score under the posts and despite pressing for the bonus point it was Mike Adlard who scored late on to conclude the match with Simon Humberstone adding the conversion.

24 January 2015 – National Two North : Stourbridge 55- 22 Hull

Stourbridge blitzed the visitors Hull with their first half display, scoring a try within the opening minute and securing the bonus point by the 21st minute. An early Greg Lound penalty miss was followed by a wave of Stourbridge attacks providing try scoring opportunities and after 22 minutes the hosts led 26-0 before Joe Stafford scored for Hull four minutes later. Stourbridge finished the half strongly and led 36-5 at the interval.

After conceding a penalty Hull scored again when prop Adam Macklin went over but two more Stourbridge tries extended their lead to 46-10 with eight minutes remaining. Another driving maul provided Jamie Clark with a try for Hull and with seconds remaining Hull got a deserved bonus point when prop Tom Price scored from a short range drive with Greg Lound landing the conversion to finish the scoring.

23 January 2010  – National Division Two North : Westoe 19-23 Hull

Hull secured their seventh consecutive league victory and rose to 5th in National League Two North with this 23-19 away win at Westoe. James Cameron kicked an early long range penalty and ten minutes later Neil Spence scored a close range try following a catch and drive. Cameron’s conversion hit the post but on 20 minutes he landed a superb penalty from the half way line to extend Hull’s lead.

However a yellow card for Laurence Pearce allowed Westoe back into the game as they scored two swift tries before Hull scored again just before the break when Vaikona offloaded for Robin Kitching to score. The second half saw Hull extend their lead as Cameron’s chip found Kitching and he held the ball long enough for Cameron to take the return pass and go over. The home side grabbed a bonus point with the last move of the match resulting in a converted try but Hull ran out winners 23-19.
