Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from 5, 10 and 15 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature this week?

21 December 2019 – National Two North : Tynedale 12-16 Hull

Hull dominated from the start and secured their fifth win in a row with a 16-12 away win at Tynedale. The visitors got off to a flying start with a Simon Humberstone penalty in the first minute and remained in the ascendancy when Tom O’Donnell spun off a maul to dive over near the posts, giving Humberstone an easy conversion to put Hull 10-0 after 17 minutes.

Tynedale responded with a catch and drive try after 24 minutes and after Cameron Curry was yellow carded for a high tackle the home side scored again just before the break with a converted try giving them a 12-10 half time lead. Simon Humberstone restored Hull’s lead with another penalty in the 55th minute and as both defences held firm he took advantage of another penalty with three minutes remaining to give Hull the win 16-12.

20 December 2014 – National Two North : Hull Ionians 29-6 Hull

League leaders Hull Ionians took the derby honours with a 29-6 home win at Brantingham Park. Hull took the game to their hosts and an early try scoring chance went begging but they kept up the pressure and a well struck Greg Lound penalty after four minutes put the visitors in front. Hull had the better of the first twenty minutes but Ionians scored two unconverted tries within a few minutes of each other before Lound landed his second penalty for a 10-6 half time score.

The second half started with an Ionians try on 50 minutes and although Hull enjoyed plenty of possession they could not get over the line and two further converted tries in the 60th and 70th minute gave the hosts the home win.
