National 2 North Weekly Round-Up

Due to the adverse weather conditions three N2N fixtures were  cancelled  as follows:

Sheffield Tigers v Hull RUFC
Harrogate v Otley
Fylde v Leeds Tykes

As November 30th is a blank date for the Division the three games will be played this coming weekend, weather permitting.

Of the matches played last weekend, only one was a Roses derby, but there were no Yorkshire County derbies played.

The Roses clash saw Preston Grasshoppers at home to Sheffield where the visitors took a 17-3 interval lead thanks to a hat-trick of tries from hooker Rhodri Campbell plus one conversion from Callum Posa.

The Hoppers played much better in the second half, scoring tries from Rob Willets and Wilkinson, one of which was converted by fly-half Greg Smith to add to his first-half penalty  goal. The second try was converted by substitute Alex Ward.

Left-winger  Christian Hooper crossed for Sheffield in the 47th minute and Posa added  penalty goal in the 64th minute for a final score of 25-17. The Hoppers missed a losing bonus point by just one point.  Rhodri Campbell took the M-o-M award for his first half exploits.  Attendance – 257.

Elsewhere, Hull Ionians were surprisingly beaten at home by visitors Tynedale who led 6-5 at the break before winning a very close game by 16-12.

This result would have been a bitter shock for the home fans after the Ionians’ fine performance the previous week when they narrowly lost to the high-flying Sheffield RUFC by 40-33. Both sides scored two tries, with No8 George Mewburn scoring in the 32nd and 78th minute for Ionians and right-winger Will Roberts and prop Ben Haigh for Tyne in the 41st and 52nd minutes.  Centre Lewis Minikin converted the second try for Ionians while full-back Tom Mann landed 2 penalty goals for Tyne. He was also awarded the M-o-M honours. Attendance – 283.

League leaders Lymm stretched their unbeaten run to 11 games with a convincing 26-0 home win over Wharfedale to maintain their habit of bonus point wins in all of their games so far. They only led 7-0 at the break following an 11th minute try from hooker Rob Makin converted by fly-half Jack Reynolds.

Makin scored again in the 43rd minute and was followed by further tries from centre Sam Wadsworth in the 58th and substitute Tom Minaton in the 70th. Reynolds converted both of these tries and was also handed the M-o-M award.  Attendance – 220.

Finally, Chester put their heavy 75-31 defeat by Leeds Tykes last week at the back of their minds when they had a 47-22 victory over Billingham  who held then to 22-22 at the interval when both sides had scored 3 tries in a very evenly contested period.

Chester must have had a  stern talk by their coach during the break as they came out with all guns firing to score three further tries. The Chester centre Andy Mcminimee landed 3 conversions and 3 penalty goals to add to his 80th minute try for a match total of 20 points.  The Chester prop Josh Woods was voted M-o-M.  Attendance – 250.

The placings at the top end of the N2N table show that Lymm are on 55 points, Sheffield RUFC are on 50, Leeds Tykes have 46 and Fylde have 36.  In the nether regions, Hull RUFC are on 19 points, Billingham are on 18, Sheffield Tigers have 15 and Harrogate have 15. No doubt the re-arranged fixtures from last week will have an impact on the present placings, with three of the clubs involved all in the bottom four.

Wherever you are, enjoy your rugby.

Ferensian.
