In his 50th game in charge of the team, director of rugby Mike Umaga was delighted to mark the milestone with a 23-21 win at home to high-flying Fylde. The visitors had won seven of their nine games, but Umaga set the team up brilliantly to put in one of their best performances of the season. With three successive games against sides in the bottom three, a win against Fylde was needed and Umaga was able to celebrate a win on his 50th game.
“Fifty games. It’s a blur,” Mike said.
“Myself and Tony are still enjoying it and as long as the boys are enjoying what we are doing, hopefully they’ll ask us back for another 20 first and then we see how we go from there.
“It was nice to get a win for the team for all the work they have done and for the games we’ve been close in.
“We talked about a number of things for this game a lot this week and it was good to see those things come off.
“We spoke about things like playing in the right areas, not to be too anxious or maverick in defence and our line stayed in tact.
“We also spoke about being more vocal with and without the ball in terms of communication.
“It was important we took our opportunities and we did, although we still left some points out there.
“Winning is good for the soul and we need to make sure we don’t go back from the standards we set against Fylde in the coming weeks.”
