Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from 5, 10 and 15 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

16 November 2019 – National Two North: Hull 24-27 Sedgley Park

Hull came back from a difficult start to come within a whisker of beating Sedgley Park. An early penalty for the visitors was followed up by two converted tries for Park. Hull finally got on the scoreboard just before half time with a catch and drive try awarded to Laurence Cowen and the hosts started the second half strongly with hooker Ali Thomson going over for a try.

Sedgley responded with a drop goal to lead 20-10 but Hull scored next with a Harvey Harding try converted by Simon Humberstone. Hull then conceded possession from the kick off which led to the visitors No.8 crashing over for a converted try and a 27-17 lead. Another forward drive from Hull resulted in a try for Charlie Beech converted by Reece Dean to give Hull a bonus point.

15 November 2014 – National Two North: Hull 11-15 Broadstreet

Hull went down 15-11 to fellow strugglers Broadstreet in a scrappy and error strewn game at the Ferens Ground. The only score in the first half came from an unconverted try for Broadstreet in the 16th minute. In the 52nd minute James Kirk opened Hull’s account with a penalty but five minutes later Broadstreet stretched their lead with a penalty kick of their own.

A break from Hull resulted in Lee Brown being tackled just short of the line and when a Broadstreet defender prevented him from playing the ball a yellow card was issued but no penalty try. From the resultant penalty Kirk made the score 6-8 but five minutes later the visitors scored a converted try having capitalised on some slack tackling. Hull set up a tense finish in the 71st minute when a break by Kirk saw Tom Price crash over in the corner for an unconverted try but Broadstreet held on for the win.

After 50 minutes Thomas Allen scored a debut try after an offload from Tevita Vaikona and James Cameron’s conversion provided an eight point cushion.
