Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from 5, 10 and 15 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

2 November 2019 – National Two North : Sheffield Tigers 12-9 Hull

An added time long range penalty for Sheffield Tigers that dramatically clipped the crossbar as it went over was the difference between the two sides at a rain sodden Dore Moor. Both teams adopted a kicking game to suit the conditions and the Tigers led 6-0 at the break from two penalties.

Simon Humberstone slotted over a penalty early in the second half and then repeated the feat to level the scores. Just after the hour Humberstone was on target again to put Hull into the lead but from the restart the hosts levelled with their third penalty of the afternoon. As the clock ran down it looked as though Hull were on course for their second consecutive draw but Mark Ireland’s long range effort settled the game and gave the Tigers their fourth consecutive win.

1 November 2014 – National Two North : Leicester Lions 39-17 Hull

Hull paid the price for a lacklustre first half as they went down to defeat at Leicester Lions. The hosts swept forward with regularity and scored three tries for a 22-0 half time lead. Hull started the second half with much more purpose and seemed to benefit from the fresh legs of three substitutes as the scrum stabilised and the side went forward.

Jamie Broadley broke clear to score an unconverted try on 54 minutes and although the Lions scored themselves from the kick off Hull enjoyed a sustained period of pressure which resulted in a try from Mike Jobling. Leicester seized on another error and extended their lead to 39-10 with a converted try but with nine minutes remaining a sharp break from Hardisty was finished by Matthews for a try converted by Tanumi. Hull pushed for the bonus point but Leicester held firm for a 39-17 win.

31 October 2009 – National Division Two North : Hull 29-41 Caldy

Hull started badly and gave away two penalties and a converted try in the first fifteen minutes but James Cameron struck three penalties and Robin Kitching ran in a breakaway try for a 14-19 half time score. The second half saw a yellow card for Caldy and Cameron reduced the deficit to 17-19 with his close range penalty. Caldy stepped up a gear and responded with another try before Oliver Norman scored his first try for the club to set up a tense finish. But unfortunately Dan Cook was sin binned for foul play with five minutes remaining which resulted in Caldy being awarded a penalty try. Hull responded with another Norman try in stoppage time to put them back in the frame for a bonus point but Caldy had the last word as they mauled their way over following a line out to finish the scoring.
