Despite two yellow cards, a penalty count of 15-7 against and the loss of influential number eight Paulos Latu early on, Hull won a game full of open rugby by 34-24.
Both sides notched four tries but Hull’s full-back Reece Dean kicked four conversions and two penalties adding 14 points to ensure his side’s winning total.
The home side started well and only good defence kept them scoreless until the ninth minute when a catch-and-drive following a penalty kick to touch, saw Wharfedale ‘s prop Jake Armstrong getting the try with full back Hodgson adding the conversion to take an early 7-0 lead.
Hull steadily worked their way back into the game and having won a lineout 30 yards out, possession was retained until backrower Adam Brankley, taking a great line, raced onto the ball to burst over for a try wide out left after 24 minutes. Dean kicked a fine conversion. Shortly after this Hull lost their number eight Paulos Latu who was replaced by the highly experienced Will Hall.
Almost immediately Hull scored again after a scrum near halfway saw the visitors handle well making good ground through their backs before Adam Brankley, having backed up brilliantly, took the final pass to touch down again with Dean adding the conversion.
Better was follow when Harvey Harding scored a try following a break by man-of-the-match Brankley. Dean obliged once again seeing Hull in a 21-7 lead. However with half-time beckoning, Wharfedale got themselves right back in the game through their forwards with a drive to the line seeing their other prop Dickinson touching down with Hodgson getting the conversion.
The second half started with Wharfedale open side Fawcett being penalised under his own posts and being yellow carded for a dangerous tackle. Dean converted the penalty.
Hull then had prop Tom Bairstow yellow carded for offside after 46 minutes and whilst he was off the field Wharfedale reduced the arrears after 54 minutes with another catch-and-drive unconverted try, awarded to substitute forward Beresford.
After 61 minutes Hull’s Brankley was yellow carded for what seemed to be offside which was surprising. Hull were starting to make changes and prop Charlie Beech, backs Duell Trueman and Keane Naylor were introduced.
Hull started to dominate the scrums and the pressure began to tell and just after Hull had their full compliment back on the field, a 60-yard move on their left hand side saw classy handling and timing of the final pass put Harry Dawkins in for a try in the left hand corner after 72 minutes with Dean converting.
Moments later Dean kicked a penalty from just inside his own half to give his side a 34-19 advantage. Wharfedale never gave up and a late bonus point try from their winger Prell was their consolation as Hull were worthy 34-24 winners.
