This Week’s Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from 5, 10 and 15 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

28 September 2019 – National Two North : Hull 18-36 Hinckley

Hull lost their first game of the season and were left to rue a number of missed chances in a 36-18 home defeat to Hinckley. Hull opened the scoring with a try from centre Ali Heard converted by Simon Humberstone. Hinckley were quick to respond and scored from a catch and drive move after 16 minutes. An interception followed by a forward pass saw Hull miss two opportunities to add to their lead but a Reece Dean penalty put Hull ahead 10-5 after 23 minutes.

Hinckley persisted with the catch and drive tactic and scored a converted try before half time for a 12-10 lead at the break. Early in the second half Hull regained the lead with another Reece Dean penalty but Hinckley responded with two tries in quick succession. A further two late tries, one converted, sandwiched a consolation try for Hull’s Latu Makaafi to see the visitors home.

27 September 2014 – National Two North : Hull 20-20 Harrogate

Hull let a 17-3 lead slip to draw 20-20 at home to Harrogate as former coach Kerry Wood returned to haunt his old club at the Ferens Ground. Hull led 9-0 at half time courtesy of three Greg Lound penalties and Harrogate down to 14 men following a yellow card offence. The second half started in dramatic style as Harrogate received another yellow card for tackling a man in the air from the kick off. This reduced Harrogate to 13 men and Hull took advantage with an unconverted Will Haddow try.

A penalty apiece saw Hull lead 17-3 which Harrogate soon reduced with a converted try on the hour mark. Following a yellow card for Devonshire, Harrogate took advantage with an unconverted Kerry Wood try on 67 minutes. Lound steadied Hull’s nerves with a drop goal and a 20-15 lead with six minutes remaining but with two minutes left another yellow card for Hull enabled Harrogate to set up a line out resulting in a game saving unconverted try by Wood to draw the match.

Guy would go on to make 242 career appearances and remains the club record appearance holder.

Although the scores were level at 3-3 after 10 minutes thanks to a James Cameron penalty Rugby effectively won the game in the first half with three tries. The second half saw Rugby continue with their flank offensive game and a bad day for Hull was summed up by a disallowed try from Alex Campbell and a red card for Dan Cook for foul play with five minutes remaining.
