This Week’s Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from 5, 10 and 15 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

21 September 2019 – National Two North: Stourbridge 14-19 Hull
Hull remained unbeaten following their return to National Two North by recording their first away win of the season against a powerful and well organised Stourbridge side. The home side took the lead on nineteen minutes with a converted try but Hull responded with a Simon Humberstone penalty followed by an unconverted try from Latu Makaafi to lead 8-7 at half time.

An early second half converted try put Stourbride back in front before good hands allowed Reece Dean to race in for an unconverted try with twenty minutes to go. Both sides pushed for the winning score but two Humberstone penalties in the 66th and 74th minutes resulted in Hull securing the away win.

20 September 2014 – National Two North: Chester 32-0 Hull
Hull’s third game of the season saw a disjointed performance result in a disappointing 32-0 defeat at Chester. First half chances went begging for the visitors and Chester led 12-0 at the break. An early second half penalty for Chester was followed by another try and the game was effectively over.

Hull never gave up but problems with the line out and poor handling contributed to a frustrating afternoon as Chester crossed for two further close range tries to conclude the scoring.

19 September 2009 – National Division Two North: Hull 19-44 Macclesfield
Hull suffered their first defeat of the season going down 44-19 at home to a strong Macclesfield side. The visitors led 6-0 from two penalty kicks in the first ten minutes but Ben Wade’s try brought Hull back to within one point. However Macclesfield quickly re-established themselves and scored two converted tries and kick a penalty for a 23-5 half time lead.

Within a minute of the restart a blood injury for prop Andy Gravil resulted in Kris Fullman replacing him but unfortunately Fullman was then dismissed three minutes later for foul play in the scrum. Macclesfield extended their lead with a converted try and midway through the half Ben Davis-Rice scored his first try for Hull, converted by James Cameron. Five minutes later Chris Murphy scored a third Hull try finishing off Alex Piercy’s magnificent run. James Cameron again added the conversion but ultimately Macclesfield proved too strong and two late converted tries in the last ten minutes sealed the victory for the visitors.
