Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from 5, 10 and 15 years ago. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?
14 September 2019 – National Two North – Hull 36-29 Tynedale
Two Stephen Johnson tries ensured Hull gained their first win of the season after edging past Tynedale 36-29 at the Ferens Ground. An early try for Tynedale after five minutes and two further scores, either side of Johnson’s first try, kept Tynedale in front for most of the first half before Keane Naylor scored just before the break for the hosts.
An early second half penalty try was awarded to Hull before Tynedale replied with a try to reduce the deficit to two points. Two quick tries from Johnson and Ali Heard gave Hull a fourteen point advantage before Tynedale replied with a converted try but Hull held firm to record the win and retain their unbeaten start to the season.

13 September 2014 – National Two North – Hull 10-44 Hull Ionians
Hull Ionians scrummaging ability and a highly organised defence gave the visitors the bragging rights ten years ago in the derby game. A frantic opening saw I’s score an unconverted try in the first minute before Hull immediately responded with a Jamie Clark try converted by James Cameron.
The visitors regained the lead with a penalty and added two more tries and a further penalty before the break to lead 25-10 with Hull’s only other first half score coming from a James Cameron penalty. The second half saw Hull enjoy plenty of possession and get good field positions but the visitors defence held firm throughout and three further tries for I’s secured a 44-10 derby win.

12 September 2009 – National Division Two North : Hull Ionians 31-48 Hull
In our first season as a National League club we followed our fine 31-25 home win over Fylde on the opening day of the season by going one better when we defeated local rivals Hull Ionians 48-31 at Brantingham Park in the first league game between the two clubs for five years. On a gloriously sunny day we ran in four first half tries to lead 26-9 at the break and secure the bonus point.
In the second half the home side scored two tries, followed by three more for us, before Hull Ionians got a consolation try deep into added time but overall a fine display of open rugby to run in seven tries tells it own story. Winger Russell Westcott made a fine starting debut scoring two tries while Ben Wade also scored two. Other tries came from Robin Kitching, Alex Piercy and a spectacular 60-yard solo try from Tevita Vaikona. James Cameron landed five conversions and a towering 55-yard penalty goal to contribute to an excellent win.
