This pre season friendly at Mowden Park saw both sides fielding regular seasoned players and new recruits in a game played at a high pace in perfect conditions.
In the first half, both sides created chances and it was Hull who were able to capitalise early on when a crunching tackle saw the ball bounce loose with Hull’s captain and centre Ali Heard picking up the ball and racing clear before putting returning winger Mike Adlard in for a try under the posts. Harrison Astley added the extras for an early 7-0 lead.
Darlington replied after 13 minutes with their centre taking a good line to touch down for an unconverted try. The last 10 minutes of the half saw Hull score two tries when firstly Adlard was sent clear and outpaced the defence for a fine individual try.
Moments later, debutant full-back Fynlay Hobson kicked through for Adlard to gather the ball and send fellow winger Brandon Norman over the try line. Both tries were converted by Astley. A late unconverted try from Darlington saw Hull lead 21-10 at half-time.
The second period saw Darlington make a couple of changes and a slightly steadier approach saw them score two tries with one converted to take the lead by one point after 56 minutes.
A final try from Darlington right on full time saw a final score of 27-21 in Darlington’s favour. Hull showed a style and resilience that bodes well for the season ahead.
Every player made a good contribution but the returning Adlard caught the eye as did debutant full-back Hobson, fellow newcomers second row Anthony McCormack and back rower Adam Brankley.
There were encouraging signs in every area and it will be interesting to see this form replicated when the league season starts in a fortnight at home to Otley (September 7).
