It’s been 16 years since Yorkshire last won the Bill Beaumont County Championship, when our very own Dan Cook led the white rose county out onto the hallowed turf of Twickenham. Dan remains the last Hull player to play for the county at rugby HQ, but having waited 16 years, five players from Chants Ave will get the chance to play at Twickenham, as Yorkshire face Kent in the final. Dan takes us back to that memorable day when as a proud Yorkshireman, he received the trophy from arguably Lancashire’s most famous rugby player.
“In all honesty, I thought that final would be the start of something for Yorkshire,” Cook said.
“Being able to build on that win, create an opportunity to establish more players in the team and be a real contender year on year.
“We played a relatively simple game plan, kicked our points on what was a very warm day at headquarters.
“The result was never in doubt really as we had belief in ourselves as well as belief for each other.
“It was a very proud day for me personally, leading such a strong and disciplined team out at Twickenham.
“The highlight of the day was receiving the cup from famous Lancastrian Sir Bill Beaumont, it made it all the more sweeter.
“The main thing is to enjoy the day.
“Take time to look around and absorb what’s going on.
“Don’t waste energy by getting too nervous beforehand, do your job, and if everything is right, the result will take care of itself.
“It’s always great to catch up with the players who were involved on that day.
“I have played with and against many of them since but there’s definitely a sense of achievement there.
“Hopefully, come this weekend, we will no longer be the last Yorkshire team to win the County Championship Final at Twickenham.”
