Richard Gore Reflects On Historic Yorkshire Win

Yorkshire gained the right to compete for the Bill Beaumont County Championship final by overcoming a highly-committed Lancashire side 26-13 at Brantingham Park on Saturday.

Hull RUFC’s five representatives all played a part in that victory. Peter Hudson-Kowalewicz’s two tries, and just as importantly, a try saving tackle when the score was only 19-13 to Yorkshire. Had Lancashire scored then, they would have gone into the lead as the try was going to be  scored under the posts making a seven point haul a near certainty.

Jamie Major played for most of the game scrummaging well and making vital hard yards. Tom Bairstow surged onto the field in the second half to give a trademark display of scrummaging and surging runs into the heart of the Lancashire defence.

Hull RUFC’s captain Ali Heard tackled hard and ran just as hard in the uncompromising manner we have become accustomed to, giving Lancashire plenty to think about.

Harrison Astley came on in the full-back position and was solid under the high ball and in defence whilst making a couple of penetrating runs to set up great field position for the white rose county.

There were plenty of other really good performances for Yorkshire, notably the number eight Ryan Burrows of Sheffield who broke the Lancashire defensive line seemingly at will, and from Hull Ionians centre Lewis Minikin who had a hand in most of the home side’s many attacking moments.

And so to Twickenham on Saturday June 15, where Yorkshire will face Kent. In Hull RUFC’s history, Jamie, Tom, Harrison, Ali and Peter will be the first players to play at Twickenham while playing for Hull RUFC at the same time.
