Jamie: Yorkshire Selections Show Strength Of Hull Squad

After finishing the season with six wins from their final nine games, it was perhaps no surprise to see five players named in the Yorkshire squad for the forthcoming Bill Beaumont County Championship. Yorkshire face a trip to Somerset in their first game before taking a ‘Roses’ clash with the old enemy Lancashire at Hull Ionians’ Brantingham Park on Saturday, June 1. Prop Jamie Major is one of the five Hull RUFC players selected and he believes this squad is capable of going one step further than last year, when Yorkshire missed out on a place in the Twickenham final following a 29-28 loss to Lancashire, who were beaten 39-37 in the final by Kent. Major is optimistic for the upcoming games.

“I think with the quality of players in the team, I’m really optimistic,” Major said.
“After seeing how close Yorkshire got to a final last year, I really want to win.
“My initial thoughts ahead of the games, is that I want to give a good account of myself in training.
“I want to be in a good position ahead of selection for the Somerset match.
“I got a message from Pete Taylor shortly after the Otley game.
“It’s fantastic for me personally having some familiar faces around in a new environment.
“But it’s also great for the other lads selected and the club and it’s testament to the amount of quality we have.
“The final is still at Twickenham and it would be a great achievement and experience to play in a venue steeped in so much history.
“And to do it with my good mates would be the cherry on top.
“I have been to Twickenham once before, when I got the chance to walk out onto the pitch back when I was 15 before England’s game with Italy through the rugby schools scheme.”
