This Week’s Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from the last 5, 10 and 15 years. It continues to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

2018-19 : Hull RUFC had no game as the season had finished the previous Saturday.

2013-14 : Hull RUFC had no game this weekend and only one game remaining in the season.

18 April 2009 – North One : Hull 64-12 West Park St Helens

Hull comprehensively beat West Park St Helens at the Ferens Ground but missed out on automatic promotion as Westoe won at Beverley. As a result Hull will need to beat Chester in a play-off game for the second promotion place. Hull knew they had to beat West Park by more than 38 points but they also knew that table-toppers Westoe had to lose at Beverley and despite running in nine tries and James Cameron setting new club records Westoe’s victory saw them take the automatic promotion spot. Hull took an early lead with a 5th minute penalty from James Cameron and he then converted Latu Makaafi’s 22nd minute try to give Hull a 10-0 lead.

Two tries in two minutes from West Park, one converted, put the visitors 12-10 ahead before Director of Rugby Tevita Vaikona and full back Guy Martinson added two more tries for Hull, both converted by Cameron, for a 24-12 half time lead. After the break West Park’s resistance crumbled. Rob Devonshire forced his way over on 46 minutes with Cameron again converting. Vaikona scored his second try on 49 minutes and completed his hat-trick on 55 minutes, Cameron converting the second score.

Just after the hour Darren Wigg scored a try, Vaikona bagged his 4th try on 67 minutes and Devonshire got his second try on 73 minutes. James Cameron converted all three to become the club’s highest points scorer in a season ( which lasted until last Saturday when Reece Dean set a new club record)  and the club’s record goal scorer in a season beating both previous records held by David Prescott. But now the focus turned to a crunch play-off game at home to Midlands One runners-up Chester in a weeks time.
