Reece: The Pressure Of Kicking Goals Has Helped Me To Club Record

For 16 seasons, the single-season record for points scored has stood. It belonged to James Cameron who racked up 254 points in the 2008/09 season. It was a record few expected to be broken, but on Saturday, the record fell. Reece Dean began the day six points shy of the record and thanks to a first half try and conversion, Dean’s name was added to the history books.

“I have never thought about breaking the record if I’m honest!” Dean said.
“I didn’t know about it until Stephen mentioned it on the coach on the way to Sheffield.
“It’s always nice to get solo awards or records!
“Next year it’s always my goal to improve, so I suppose the aim will be to break it again!
“I love goal kicking and have kicked since little and always practice. I’m particular, I love the pressure it puts on you.
“Coming from league where goal kicking isn’t as important as it is in union, so I’ve got to understand how big having a decent kicker is.”

Unfortunately, Dean’s accomplishment came in a defeat at Sheffield RUFC. However, the achievement is testament to his ability to consistently convert penalties and nail conversions. His conversion following his own try at Sheffield showed how brilliant a kicker he is. The wind had already blown the ball off the tee and was in the process of doing so again, moving from side to side when Dean made the perfect connection with the ball. Dean needs six successful goals in our season finale against Otley on April 27 to break Cameron’s record of 101 goals in a single season. So the big question is, which of his 257 points scored so far this season was his favourite?

“I think it was Wharfedale at home, from inside our own half sticks out.
”Also the one at Hull Ionians after we won the game in the last minute!
“Even though the game was won, to nail it from the touchline against them was nice!
“And the one at Tynedale away in really windy conditions to win the game when we only had 1 person on the bench.
“Those are the ones that stand out.”
