In a game that was always going to be tight, Hull and Fylde served up a 75 point rugby banquet with Hull edging it in the last few minutes.
An early try to Hull saw them take an early lead as the forwards drove from a lineout with Alec Renouf getting the touchdown converted by full back Reece Dean after five minutes. A Dean penalty after 14 minutes saw Hull ten points ahead but thereafter Hull put them selves under pressure as Alec Renouf and Bureta Faraimo were yellow carded in quick succession.
Fylde scored tries 20 and 25 minutes through Rawlins and scrum half Gould with off half Smith converting Rawlins’ try. A late Dean penalty eased Hull back into the game but a try by Fylde’s Turner on half-time saw the visitors ahead 17-13 at the break.
The second half was both frantic but full of excellent rugby from both sides. Hull brought on scrum half James Naylor, prop Charlie Beech and winger Keane Naylor for the second half which gave the home side some energy.
After just three minutes of the second period, a sweeping move by Hull saw Dean race clear for a try he converted. Almost immediately, Hull attacked again and a chip ahead bounced well for James Naylor who touched down under the lost for Dean to convert.
Fylde responded through scrum half Gould’s try converted by Smith after 50 minutes only for Faraimo to score a try moments later converted by Dean. Fylde edged ahead with tries from Parker and Bentley with one converted by Smith to see the visitors lead 36-34.
With time running out, a series of Hull attacks ended with Harrison Astley putting centre Peter Hudson-Kowalewicz in for a try to see Hull leading 39-36 and play out the last three minutes for the victory.
