This Week’s Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from the last 5, 10 and 15 years. It’s always proved to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

Hull extended their lead at the top of the table with this away victory in the North East. Billingham led with a converted try until shortly before half time when Mike Adlard sprinted over for an unconverted try which resulted in Billingham leading 7-5 at the break. Hull took 12 minutes in the second period to make their scrummaging count and a penalty try saw the visitors take the lead for the first time.

Simon Humberstone produced a delicate chip ahead for Stephen Hihetah to race onto and score with Humberstone’s magnificent conversion increasing the score to 19-7. Hull got their try bonus point when Ali Heard chipped through for Mike Adlard to collect and score with Humberstone again converting as Hull wrapped up the win by 26-7.

Hull gave second placed Stourbridge a real fright in a pulsating match at the Ferens Ground before going down 38-29. Stourbridge scored three tries in the first 17 minutes, two converted, which had Hull reeling but having weathered the storm the hosts came back strongly. Rob Devonshire powered over in the corner to reduce the deficit but the conversion attempt hit the upright. However five minutes later the Stourbridge scrum half raced 50 metres for a fine individual converted try.

Hull responded again and in the 32nd minute Phil Murphy crashed over but again James Cameron saw his kick hit the upright and Stourbridge led 26-10 at half time. The visitors extended their lead with an unconverted try in the 45thminute before Hull replied with three tries in 19 minutes. Alex Piercy scored an unconverted try before Jesse Bright broke through for a converted try and in the 72nd minute Joe Stafford crashed over in the corner leaving Cameron to convert from wide out. Hull took a 4th minute lead when fly half James Cameron slotted over a penalty. On 34 minutes Cameron’s astute kick was anticipated by Alex Piercy who raced in to score near the posts leaving Cameron with a simple conversion.

West Hartlepool responded immediately from the kick off and scored an unconverted try before Cameron’s 36th minute penalty made it 13-5 at the break.
