Memory Lane With Stephen Hodgson

Club historian Stephen Hodgson takes us on a trip down memory lane every week of the season. Stephen picks out matches the club played on this week from the last 5, 10 and 15 years. It’s always proved to be a popular read with former and current players. Do you feature in this week’s article?

23 March 2019 – Northern Premier Division : Harrogate 21-17 Hull

Newly crowned champions Hull suffered only their second defeat of the season at Harrogate having not lost since the narrow single point loss at Rossendale on the opening day. Simon Humberstone put Hull into the lead with a penalty on 35 minutes. Two minutes later his beautifully weighted pass to Mike Adlard resulted in the winger racing 60 yards before being halted by a high tackle resulting in a penalty try and a yellow card for Harrogate’s Hugo Tasker.

Hull’s ten point half time lead was cut to three points just two minutes into the second half as Harrogate scored a converted try. Harvey Harding had to leave the field injured and shortly afterwards a second converted try put Harrogate into a 14-10 lead after 50 minutes. Hull retook the lead on 78 minutes when Harrogate were penalised for collapsing a scrum and the referee awarded Hull another penalty try to put them 17-14 ahead. But on the last play Harrogate’s Andy Bolde surged over for a try converted by Nathan Wyman to seal the win for the hosts.

22 March 2014 – National Two North : Hull 32-19 Chester

Hull took a massive step towards securing their National Two North league status with this win over Chester. Hull started well and Joe Stafford crashed over near the posts allowing James Cameron a simple conversion to give Hull a seven point lead. However Chester replied almost immediately, reacting quicker to a penalty that struck the post and gathering the bouncing ball to score a converted try and level the scores after eight minutes.

The game swung Hull’s way after the half hour mark when Cameron landed an excellent 40 yard penalty and five minutes later when Max Argyle powered his way through four players to score and just before half time another Cameron penalty gave Hull a 18-7 lead at the break. The second half started superbly for Hull as Richard Hayes scored near the posts with Cameron’s conversion stretching the lead to 25-7. Chester rallied and Gray converted his own try on fifty four minutes to give them renewed hope.

But on the hour a Dominic Lespierre score under the posts, followed by Cameron’s conversion, put the result beyond doubt. Chester kept going and scored a late unconverted try but Hull gained the full five point haul. One final fact from this game was that Hull did not use any of their substitutes – the first time since tactical substitutions were allowed that Hull didn’t use any.
