Hull travel over the Pennines on Saturday to take on Lymm RUFC in what promises to be an entertaining game. Lymm have had a mixed season as far as their results are concerned, winning six games so far whilst losing 13, but they like to play an open running style of rugby and have had some notable successes.
As telling as any result was their close game with promotion hopefuls Rotherham going down eventually 36-22. Their all-weather pitch is ideal for fast-flowing rugby but for teams used to playing on grass week in week out, it can be a new experience. Different boots may be required and the bounce of the ball is very different from that seen on grass pitches.
Hull will have to adapt, but they recently played on a similar surface at Billingham so they have seen the problems and benefits of such a surface.
Hull have had some further injury problems with Mr Reliable, captain and centre Ali Heard, out and Joe Barratt, one of Hull’s scrum-halves, who has played a significant part in this year’s campaign, is also out.
Centres Peter Hudson-Kowalewicz and Bureta Faraimo are available again and it is hoped that the two-week gap between Hull’s last fixture and this game will have given time for other players with knocks to have recovered.
Hull’s pack has performed well this campaign despite a number on enforced changes. The regular front row of Tom Bairstow, Mike Jobling and Jamie Major, supported brilliantly from the bench by Charlie Beech, has done well all season, and if they can maintain that form they will be an important unit in the battle for possession and the hard yards going forward.
Second row Liam Regardsoe has been very solid all season and despite having several partners this season he has not let that distract him at all. Hull’s back division welcomed winger Keane Naylor in the game against Wharfedale and his performance from the bench would suggest that he is ready to play his full part in the remaining games of this season.
Lymm are a talented side who Hull only beat 34-27 earlier this season, so it will be a close call, but Hull’s growing confidence allied to edging the forward battle could see them record their 11th victory of the season.
